One of the things I found very interesting this week was the mention that the Quran changes with the times.  The text states "although the Qur’an itself does not change, the fundamental values
derived from it are likely to be expressed in different ways over time. Such
expressions are likely to reflect our knowledge and understanding of the text,
along with the issues and concerns of our own generations..."  This ability to adapt to the fundamental values that are important to our current society is an incredible thing and probably is one of the reasons Islam has been able to persevere through the times.  The example of human rights is brought up as a pretty current issue that has been prominent in the Quran and Islam tradition.  Rights such as "freedom of speech, quality before the law, freedom from torture or inhumane punishment" have been derived from the Quran for a long time.  With that in mind the Quran may have the potential to always be relevant which I believe makes it a great text.
On a side note, this change of emphasis over time makes me think back to DOA.  After all, if the meaning of the text is malleable then there must be tons of interpretations and preferences.  With that in mind it seems that true knowledge of the text is impossible and the original intention of the written words may never be able to be truly understood from the authors perspective.
